Bandana from a Ghanaian perspective. We called it seaman joley, translation Seaman - (anybody who work by the sea, chandler, navy...etc). Joley is a local GA slang that means girlfriend. The seaman was the ladies man in the early 80s. He had money. The ship docked at various towns for a couple days before it got to its final destination …the seamen had paisley scarfs tied around their necks or hanging out their back pockets. That was the woman magnet. They usually left it for their girlfriends when it was time to go back on road (sea). The young ladies used it as a head wrap. it was more like a status symbol. This was how the bad & boujie b__*’s announced their presence in the neighborhood. The OG City Girls for the lack of a better term.
